American's decision not to continue in F2 appears to end hopes of Cadillac F1 drive.

In his desire to enter F1 with the new American team, Herta, who finished runner-up in the 2024 IndyCar series, switched to F2 this season in a bid to secure the necessary superlicence points.

However, it has been a dreadful season for the 26-year-old, who is currently 19th in the F2 standings, not once having made it to the podium. Indeed, to date, his best result is 5th in the Barcelona Sprint.

Asked by F1 Insider about his plans for 2027, the Californian replied: "I think we'll have to wait and see, but I have no interest in another year of Formula 2."

From the outset, Cadillac has made clear that its intention was to have an American at the wheel of one of its cars, and that American was to be Herta, now that dream appears to be over.

Though he began the season with a number of points finishes, since his 5th-place at Barcelona he has only scored points on one more occasion, the Spa Feature race, in which he finished 7th, with just three rounds of the championship remaining.

Last weekend's round at the Madring was probably what sealed his fate, a crash in qualifying meaning that he couldn't participate in either of the races.

It is unclear what Herta will do now, though the most likely scenario is a return to IndyCar, a move which will place further doubt in the minds of those who do not consider the American series a 'proper' feeder series for F1.

Though 'quitting' F2, Herta insists that the series, currently led by Bulgarian Nikola Tsolov, ahead of Brazil's Rafael Câmara and Italy's Gabriele Minì, has his respect.

"I'll definitely watch it," he said, "I'll always enjoy following Formula 2 as a racing series. I think I've watched Formula 2 races for the past ten years or so, and I'll continue to do so.

"I really like the racing style and the races themselves," he added, "and I have great respect for the drivers who compete here because I know what they're capable of.

"While I already knew that, now I know it even more from my own experience and I'm aware of the level at which everyone is operating. I'll definitely keep following it."
